Copyright, Media Literacy Concepts, Hominids and Online Collaboration (Feb. 12-16)

Digital Production 120
This week the students will continue to review copyright, fair dealing, public domain, and creative commons. The students will watch short videos on the topics as well as complete blog responses. The class will also start introductory activities for the digital imaging unit  Links to the student blogs and most of the assignment will be made available at the course blog.

Media Studies 120
This week the students will be exploring media literacy concepts. Working in pairs, the students will select a media literacy concept, explore it and then present their findings to the class. Links to the student blogs and most of the assignments will be made available at the course blog.

History 10
The students will spend some time looking at the Theory of Evolution, and they will view National Geographic's Search for the Ultimate Survivor, The Mystery of Us. Students will have discussions and note taking activities as they consider the different early hominids that are explored in the documentary. If time permits, the students will begin a group project on the Stone Age.

BBT 10
During the beginning of the week, the class will complete a response assignment based on a documentary they watched that explored the progress of technology over the past few decades. The students will use Google Drive to complete this assignment so they can explore the features and participate in online collaboration and feedback. The students will then explore the different units for this course and begin their first unit of study. Student blogs and most of the assignments can be viewed here.

Media Literacy, Computer Usage Policies and Speculation (Feb. 5-9)

Media Studies 120
The class will  discuss what is meant by media literacy and read and discuss key media literacy concepts. The students will complete a blog assignment on media literacy and reply to other student blog entries on Tuesday and Wednesday. The remainder of the week will be spent exploring media literacy concepts. Working in pairs the students will select a media literacy concept, explore it and then present their findings to the class. Links to the student blogs and most of the assignments will be made available at the course blog.

Digital Production 120
The students will first complete a presentation about the computer usage policy. When designing their presentation, the students will consider some layout and design principles and are expected to apply them in their own presentations. Students will also create a blog that will act as an online portfolio for their work. The class will review copyright, public domain, fair dealing and creative commons. Links to the student blogs and most of the assignment will be made available at the course blog.

BBT 10
This week students will start by looking at the computer usage policy and consider some of the ethical dilemmas that can occur around the use of technology in an educational setting. The students will also create a blog on Blogger, using either a new or existing Google account. The students will spend some time getting familiar with their blogs and also looking at other applications that are available through Google Drive. Online activities for this class are available at the Broad Based Technology 10 course blog.

History 10
The students will start their study of pre-history looking at how historians use interpretation and speculation based on the evidence we have from the time period before written records. The students will also read about and discuss the theory of evolution and the story of creation. They will then start viewing National Geographic's Search for the Ultimate Survivor, The Mystery of Us. Students will have discussions and note taking activities during the documentary.

It's Exam Week...

Journalism 120
If your team has yet to complete the final project (same marking weight as a final exam), please complete the project and submit it by this Thursday, January 25. If you complete any other class assignments, make sure you notify me, so I can evaluate them this week (before the end of the day on Thursday, January 25).

English 123
Students are reminded that the exam is Wednesday morning (January 24) in the regular classroom. The exam begins after homeroom and morning announcements. Click here if you want to complete the literary terms review.

BBT 10 
Any students that have incomplete assignments are reminded to come in after exams this week to get the assignments finished, or finish them online from home. These assignments will not be evaluated after Thursday,  January 25, so please complete them as soon as possible. If you finish any incomplete assignment from home and post them to your course blog, please let me know, so I can evaluate them before submitting the final marks.

Final Projects and Exam Review (Jan. 15-19)

Journalism 120
The students will complete their final assignment for the course this week. Since there is no final exam in the course, the final assignment will hold the same evaluation weight as a final exam. The students are working in teams. Any team that does not complete the assignment by Friday is expected to find time during the exam week to finish the work. English 123
The class will complete their short story study this week.The students are reminded that they have a final exam in this course. An exam review will be held at the end of the week. The exam is next Wednesday morning, January 24.

History 10
The students will complete their study of Ancient Rome this week. Students are reminded they have a final exam in this course. The students will have an exam review this week. The exam is next Thursday morning, January 25.

PSAs, Short Stories, Coding and The Roman Empire (Jan. 08-12)

Journalism 120
The students will start work on their final assignment for the course this week. Since there is no final exam in the course, the final assignment will hold the same evaluation weight as a final exam. The students will first get in teams of three or four and create team norms and review the team roles and responsibilities. The teams will then spend some time researching different commercials and public service announcements they feel are effective as they prepare to create their own public service announcement. English 123
This week the students will begin a short story study. The students will read two short stories, "The Fun They Had" and "Just Once." They will discuss the stories and also complete response activities. The students are reminded that they have a final exam in this course. An exam review will be held next week.

BBT 10
The students should be finishing up the fourth unit "Automotive Technology." Students who have completed or finished the fourth unit this week, are working or should start working on the fifth and final unit, Computer Science Fundamentals (Coding). Student course blogs and most of the assignments can be viewed here.

History 10
The students will continue their study of Ancient Rome this week. This week they will look at the decline of the Roman Republic and rise of the Roman Empire. Students are reminded they have a final exam in this course. An exam review will be held at the end of next week.

Work Assignments, Film Adaptation, Automobile Design and The Punic Wars (Dec. 18-22)

Journalism 120
The students will have time to finish any incomplete class assignments, and make sure they have their work posted to their course blogs. Any incomplete blog assignments have to be posted by this Thursday, December 21. Students will also complete an work assignments. English 123
On Monday and Tuesday the students will complete their graphic novel study on The War of the Worlds. The students will also view the 2005 film adaptation of The War of the WorldsStudents are reminded to finish any incomplete work by Thursday, December 21.

The students will continue their fourth unit this week (Automotive Technology). Students should try to finish the unit looking at automobile design and completing a research assignment. Student course blogs and the different units can be viewed here.

History 10
The students will start their study of Ancient Rome this week. The students will first get familiar with the geography of the Italian Peninsula. They will study the rise of the Roman Republic and the Punic Wars.

Fake News, The War of the Worlds, Automotive Technology and Alexander the Great (Dec. 11-15)

Journalism 120
This week's blog assignment will give students an opportunity to explore what is meant by fake news and how to spot it. The students are expected to complete their blog entry by next Monday, December 18. Students will also be working on their job assignments this week. Students are also reminded that any outstanding class blog assignments must be completed and posted to their blogs by next Thursday, December 21 to be considered for assessment. Student blogs and some of the course assignments can be viewed here and many of their job assignments are posted on The Blackville Talon.  

English 123
The students will complete their class study of the graphic novel adaption of H.G. Well's The War of the Worlds. The students will complete parts 3 and 4 of the graphic novel as well as response activities. The students will view the 2005 film adaptation of The War of the Worlds next week.

BBT 10
This week the students will continue to work on their fourth unit, Automotive Technology. Students should attempt to complete this unit by the end of next Thursday, December 21. Student course blogs and the different units and assignments can be viewed here.

History 10
The students will complete their study of Ancient Greece on Tuesday looking at the Peloponnesian War, Philip II of Macedon, Alexander the Great and Ancient Greek philosophers. The review for the test will be on Wednesday and the Ancient Greece test is on Thursday. Students are also reminded to have submitted their written responses on the Battle of Thermopylae by this Tuesday, December 12.
