Media Studies 120

Course Content: This is a semester course where students will begin by studying what is meant by the term “media” and why the media is important in our lives. Social media was regularly used by about 9 in 10 Canadians aged 15 to 34 in 2018 (StatCan, 2021). This course will present an opportunity for students to examine and discuss critically some of the most important media issues. These issues include who owns and has access to the media and the impact of new and converging communications and entertainment technologies. Students will explore these issues with class discussions, projects and written reflections. The big challenge for students in this course is to foster “a critical eye” as we explore media and also to keep an “open mind” and be respectful of various opinions and viewpoints.
