Course Content: This is a semester course where students will begin with a novel study. Students will also have opportunities to complete writing assignment where they will explore the importance of writing while continuing to develop their skills. Students will also study various texts and genres such as short stories, non-fiction, graphic novels and video. Through classroom discussion and formal responses, students will have the opportunity to directly engage in the texts and respond to them personally and critically as they explore various themes and issues.

Grading:
Novel Study: 40%
My Old Newcastle and Small Gifts: 20%
The War of the Worlds: 20%

Finding Forrester: 20%
Final mark from units will be calculated for 70% before the exam.
Final Exam: 30% (or adjusted as per attendance incentive policy, if applicable).
This is a required course for graduation.
Extra Help: If at any time a student is having difficulty in the course, extra help is available upon a student’s request or as determined by the teacher.
Absenteeism: Any student who misses a class is responsible for the material missed.
Note: Students are expected to complete class work and assignments within a reasonable time frame. Work that is not completed in class is to be finished during lunch hour, after school or for homework. It is necessary for students to complete the assignments, or their lack of participation will be addressed according to school policy.
